Israel – World Leader in Humanitarian Aid

This is what Israel stands for. This should be played in all schools, worldwide. And at the U.N. it should be mandatory for all of the representatives to see it.

Please watch this 2 1/2 minute video and you’ll be glad you did. Then send it as far and wide as you can.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Some scholars believe that when the pilgrims wanted to celebrate their bountiful harvest, they looked to the Hebrew Bible for inspiration, and took the idea of the fall harvest holiday of Sukkot as their model for the first Thanksgiving feast.

Whether or not that’s true, it’s undeniable that giving thanks to G-d for the bounty of the earth is a very Jewish thing to do.  Similarly, spending time with family and friends reflects the Jewish values of family and community.

And, during Thanksgiving, we also celebrate the Jewish value of tzedakah, as many of us take time to help out those less fortunate — either by volunteering at food banks and soup kitchens, donating to food and clothing drives, or raising funds for organizations that fight hunger and poverty.

The Merrick-Bellmore Jewish Community Council strives to promote all of these values — family, community, and tzedakah — today and everyday throughout the year.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The Council Reborn!

Thanks for visiting the website of the Merrick-Bellmore Jewish Community Council.  While this organization has existed for some time, it fell into a state of neglect.  Over the last few months, however, new leadership took over and breathed new spirit into it.

Let me tell you a little about who we are and what we do.  Our founding principle is simple: to promote a strong Jewish identity among all members of the Merrick-Bellmore Jewish community — regardless of their level of observance.  No synagogue membership required!

Our common bond is our vibrant heritage and culture.  To that end, we sponsor events that celebrate our Jewish culture and values — from food festivals to holiday parties, from volunteer work in the community to raising money for charity.

All of us also must stand united in the face of threats to our Jewish community, institutions, and houses of worship.  We work tirelessly to combat all forms of antisemitism and to protect and preserve our Jewish community here on Long Island and elsewhere in our country.  We also serve as your voice to all levels of government regarding issues of concern to our community.

Finally, we give unbending support to the State of Israel.  We have seen the proliferation of vicious anti-Israel sentiment, where Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state is not only questioned, but where certain groups continue to call for its annihilation.  Israel’s well-being is central to Jewish life, and we strive to do everything in our power to ensure that Israel remains a Jewish state — secure, stable, and prosperous.

The Merrick-Bellmore Jewish Community Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all donations to it are tax deductible.
